Danny Hylton’s hat-trick condemned Wycombe Wanderers to a 4-1 trouncing at Kenilworth Road as Luton Town dominated from start to finish.

Hylton struck early in each half before Matt Bloomfield gave Wanderers hope of a comeback with just under half an hour to play.

The Hatters could have been out of sight at half-time but some profligate finishing, including Cameron McGeehan being denied from the penalty spot by Jamal Blackman, almost cost them.

A clumsy challenge from Will De Havilland allowed Hylton to step up and complete his hat-trick from 12 yards late on, before Jordan Cook scored on the break in the 90th minute.

Luton were good value for the win and the Blues struggled to gain a foothold in proceedings before Bloomfield scored against the run of play.

Wanderers will now turn their attention to a visit to Fratton Park where they will look for their first away league win of the season next Saturday.

Wanderers named deadline day signings Dominic Gape and Scott Kashket on the bench while Aaron Pierre was also among the substitutes.

The centre-back was the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer and it will interesting the see if he can regain his focus after being close to leaving the club.

Wycombe were looking to take the fine form shown during Tuesday Checkatrade Trophy win over Northampton Town into the League.

They started with the same 4-3-3 formation which had proved so potent at Sixfields Stadium as Dayle Southwell, Nick Freeman and Paul Hayes continued in attack.

Luton started the match second in League Two and showed the creativity which yielded 10 goals in five league games to go ahead in the 10th minute.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu showed great footwork to escape Bloomfield on the right side of the box and drove a cross to the near post.

The quality of the delivery meant Hylton needed only to make contact with his header to beat Blackman and give the hosts a deserved early lead.

Nathan Jones’ men were dominating proceedings and Wanderers failed to contain their free-flowing approach which saw Mpanzu, McGeehan and Cook alternate positions in midfield.

Twice more they got free down the right and only a lucky deflection and last ditch clearance from Michael Harriman prevented them doubling the lead inside 15 minutes.

Blackman has made an assured start to life at Adams Park but a fumble from the Chelsea loanee almost gifted McGeehan a tap in.

He failed to hold a curling shot from the impressive Mpanzu and the Hatters midfielder looked set to tap in before going down under Harriman’s challenge.

He would have a chance from 12 yards in the 28th minute after Stephen McGinn, who was lucky not to receive a second yellow card, brought down Cook on the edge of the box.

Luton’s number eight stepped up and struck a poor penalty low to Blackman’s right which the Wycombe stopper easily denied.

The save gave Wycombe a timely boost and while they struggled to create for the remainder of the half, they kept Luton at bay until the interval.

The second half started in the same manner as the first and Luton were 2-0 up in the 56th minute as Hylton added his second to make Luton’s overall control count.

Again he was left with the simplest of finishes after Cook’s placed shot from 12 yards was parried into the danger area by Blackman.

The Luton forward was unmarked and tapped into an empty net for a goal which looked to have ended the game as a contest.

Wanderers had other ideas, however, and pulled one back with their first genuine chance eight minutes later.

The strike came from nothing as Bloomfield gathered a loose ball in midfield and drove at the heart of the host’s defence.

After bursting into the box, the long-serving midfielder stretched and slipped a left footed shot underneath the onrushing Christian Walton and into the bottom right corner.

Wanderers were back in proceedings now and Gareth Ainsworth introduced Adebayo Akinfenwa and Garry Thompson to add renewed energy up front.

The latter almost found a leveller as he hit a near post drive from the right hand edge of the box which forced Walton into a smart save.

Luton were still a threat though, and a clever clip forward allowed McGeehan to strike at goal, but Blackman was equal to his volleyed effort.

They put the game to bed late on after Hylton collected the ball on the by-line and was bundled over by De Havilland.

He calmly sent Blackman the wrong way from the spot before a sweeping counter gave Cook a simple finish to compound Wanderers’ misery on a dire day.

The defeat leaves them just a point above the relegation zone. They are now without a league win since beating Grimsby Town in the second game of the season.
