The 10-year-old brother of a boy involved in a car accident handed a petition over to the council on Monday, calling for safety measures outside his High Wycombe school.

Year six pupil at Crown House Preparatory School, Ruben Kapoor, addressed Wycombe District Council, urging it to grant permission to install a footpath leading up to his school on Bassetsbury Lane.

Ruben decided to take action after his 7-year-old brother, Veer Kapoor, was hit by a car on the busy access road, luckily escaping with two grazed knees.

Following a short presentation to councillors Ruben handed over the petition - which rallied 415 supporters - to rounds of applause.

Wycombe District Council recently installed double yellow lines along the busy access road to stop motorists parking their cars outside the school, in a bid to quieten the area.

Ruben said: “The road has a 10mph speed limit but lots of the drivers go faster. It is busy at drop off and pick up times…

“Now we have double yellow lines on the access road which is a great idea.

“All of the parents should now park in the car park but we need a safe way to walk to the school gates.

“At the moment everyone has to walk on the muddy ground with lots of trees sticking out of the ground. So lots of people walk on the road. It is not just the school that uses the road either.

Crown House moved from its home on London Road to the bigger site of Bassetsbury Manor in 2009 after the school bought the site from WDC.

“Lots of people use The Rye. Cars and pedestrians do not mix well. My petition is quite simple. I would like to create a footpath that runs from the car park to Bassetsbury Lane.”

It is hoped the access road will benefit users of The Rye and Lido as well as parents, pupils and teachers at Crown House School.

Wycombe District Council will now consider the petition.
