A major south Bucks station will get funding for step-free access, it has been announced this week.
Transport for London confirmed that Amersham Underground station, which is on the Metropolitan Line, will receive funding for step-free access this year, which has been a hard-fought for campaign by residents and community groups.
Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan gave the news a “hearty welcome”, saying it was a project that would help “many local residents” who find it difficult to navigate steps.
She said: “Having lobbied three London Mayors on this subject I can only say that it does seem to be true that water does eventually erode stone.”
The station is one of six Underground stations to go step-free as part of London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s £200m boost to make Tube travel more accessible over the next five years.
Mrs Gillan added: “Many congratulations to our local campaigners, including our local councils, the Amersham Action Group members and the Chesham & District transport users group.
“There are many people who find it difficult to cope with steps – the young as well as older people – so this is a project which will help many local residents.”
Work on the station will start next year and is expected to be completed on all six stations by 2020.
