A new cycle route around Marlow to highlight the best sights the town has to offer and encourage more people to get on their bike has been created with the help of volunteers.

Transition Town Marlow (TTM) has created the Marlow Loop - a four mile cycle route around the town - in a bid to show off the town’s best tourist attractions, including Marlow Bridge, Riley Park, Marlow Lock, All Saints Church and the Grade II* listed Remnantz country house on West Street.

Marlow Museum, Seymour Park and Shelley Cottage – where Frankenstein author Mary Shelley lived – are also on the route.

The project team worked with NCS The Challenge on the practical side of creating the route, with young people taking part in the scheme designing leaflets and posters.

On Sunday, July 23, the group of 13 students presented their work to a group of supporters – including Marlow’s Bucks County Councillor Alex Collingwood – before they went out to ‘sticker’ the new route and drum up support with leaflets.

George Lawrence, who is part of the project team, said the point of the new route – which will run through town centre roads – is to “raise awareness” of cycling.

He said: “It’s not a cycle track in that you can use it to get the kids to school, it’s mostly for people who know how to ride on the road already.

“It has three purposes, one is for people who are visiting town, so they can bring their bike here on the train and explore the sights of the town.

“It is also for people who work at Globe Park, because they are always interested in ways they can exercise at lunch time. The Globe Park BID team put out a map showing where people can walk, but we think they could also jump on their bikes and whizz round the town.

“Three, it’s for people in town who have ridden before and are looking back into getting into cycling again. We’re hoping eventually to link it up to all of the connected cycle ways, like the Chiltern Way.”
