A ladies A Cappella group took silver at the European Barbershop Convention last weekend.

Wearing feathers and sparkly red dresses, Amersham A Cappella triumphed singing a medley of I Am What I Am and I Will Survive, as well as a ballad, No Other Love.

The group competed against top choruses from all over Europe, including Holland, Spain, France, Finland, Sweden, Ireland and Germany, in one of the biggest barbershop gatherings which was hosted in the UK this year.

The European Convention is held once every four years and at the last one in Holland in 2013, the group came in fifth place.

Amersham A Cappella won the gold medal at the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) annual convention in 2016 and was automatically put through to compete at the European event.

The group’s musical director, Helen Lappert, said: “Last time we competed in Europe in 2013 we came fifth so we were really pleased to have improved our placing and our scores.

“We were up against some pretty stiff competition and I am so proud of the girls.

“All the hard work they put in certainly paid off.”

The next competition for the chorus is the International Competition at Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) in April 2018.

The ladies will also go on to appear at Edinburgh Fringe in August next year.
