Confusion reigns after it was a revealed a car giant had pulled out of a mega move to open a huge headquarters at Handy Cross – only for the business to hit back at the council’s claims and say they are still looking at options.

Hyundai UK – which is already based in High Wycombe, along the London Road – was rumoured to be considering a move to the new £150 million Handy X Hub development, which is likely to see six new office blocks and a hotel built.

The next phase of Wycombe District Council’s Handy X Hub plans was put forward in the form of a planning application two weeks ago.

The council is hoping to attract a number of new businesses to the area by turning the site at the top of Marlow Hill into a “celebrated entrance” to High Wycombe.

A spokesman for the council seemed to confirm that Hyundai UK had pulled out of a major potential move to the new hub at the end of last year – but the company has refuted the suggestion.

A spokesman for the district council said: “Hyundai UK did consider moving its existing London Road HQ to the Handy X Hub but the company decided last year against building new offices there.

“This was a corporate decision made by the company. It is for Hyundai, rather than us, to comment on the reasons behind their decision.”

When approached for comment on the suggestion, a spokesman for Hyundai UK said the idea was still being looked at by their international parent company.

They said: “Hyundai Motor UK’s head office operations are based in High Wycombe and we have no plans to relocate outside of the area.

“We have been investigating the opportunity to move to a larger office space at the Handy Cross Hub and that situation remains the same subject to all the necessary agreements from our Korean-based parent company.”

The latest plans for the multi-million pound hub follow the completion of phase one and two of the town “masterplan” - the Waitrose superstore, the coachway and park and ride and the new Wycombe leisure centre.

A new kids’ block – including a toddler gym and a nursery – is currently being built as part of the next phase.
