A consultant breast surgeon at Wycombe Hospital will take on a gruelling cycling challenge from London to Amsterdam in a bid to raise money for a Bucks healthcare charity.

Giles Cunnick, who is also a trustee for hospital charity Scannappeal, will join a team of 30 cyclists taking on a 330km ride on April 20.

The group is aiming to raise £30,000 to pay for biopsy targeting equipment which will enable additional biopsies to be undertaken and waiting times to be reduced at Wycombe Hospital.

The Wycombe Breast Unit sees approximately 120 symptomatic new cases per week, up to five of which will require a biopsy. Improved biopsy times will reduce the “time to first offered treatment” period.

In 2017 Scannappeal, which raises money to buy medical equipment for Bucks hospitals including mersham, Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe and Community Hospitals, completed a four year campaign to raise £500,000 to fund 3D breast screening equipment for the unit.

Since Scannappeal began in 1987, they have managed to raise more than £14 million and funded equipment in every department in the hospitals they support.

Giles, who will be joined by fellow trustees of Scannappeal, William Baxter CBE and Andrew Harman, as well as other charity supporters, said: “Training has been a challenge given recent weather conditions but I know everyone taking part is determined to make every mile matter by raising as much money as they can to support Scannappeal’s fundraising efforts.

“With the Breast Unit seeing in the region of 500 new breast cancers per year we are grateful to have the best possible equipment available to us, equipment which simply wouldn’t be here without the support of Scannappeal.”

So far, Giles has managed to raise more than £1,000 of an initial £1,300 target.
