Cancer patients who want to rebuild strength and get back into fitness can now take part in a new rehabilitation programme at a High Wycombe leisure centre.

The new scheme is being run by fitness professionals from Places for People Leisure at Wycombe Leisure Centre in a bid to help patients who are undergoing treatment or who have just finished treatment.

Three key sessions are currently running focusing on breast cancer and prostate cancer and a bowel cancer scheme will also be running soon.

Patients with other forms of cancer who want to take part are encouraged to get in touch for an initial discussion.

The programme is run by a fitness professional trained in cancer rehabilitation and will include an initial one-to-one consultation followed by weekly group sessions.

Kirsty Williams, sports development and community engagement manager at Wycombe Leisure Centre, said: “Cancer treatments take their toll on the body and often leave patients fatigued and weak for many months after treatment has stopped.

“At Wycombe Sports Centre we want to help people get back to fitness and get them enjoying activities they used to take part in pre-treatment.

“Our programme is designed to gradually rebuild strength, stamina and most importantly confidence and our friendly team are on hand to answer questions and provide help every step of the way.”

Prostate cancer rehabilitation will run Tuesdays 7pm to 8pm and breast cancer rehabilitation sessions will run Saturdays 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Bowel Cancer rehabilitation sessions will start from September onwards.

Participants can sign up for a 12 week course but are not committed to attend each week and it is understood that treatments and feeling unwell may prevent a regular schedule. Participants are just encouraged to attend when they feel able.

The 12-week course costs £44 - patients will require a referral from either their GP, Macmillan nurse or consultant. Referral forms can be picked up from the reception team.
