Two High Wycombe drivers have been punished for using their mobile phones behind the wheel - and the Bucks Free Press is naming and shaming the law-breakers as part of our Hang Up! campaign.

Mohammed Asim Shiraz, 29, of Cressex Road, was seen using his phone while driving on the same road in October last year, but has not been disqualified amid fears he would lose his job.

He was found guilty at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on May 1 and was slapped with six points but decided against having his licence taken away because his elderly parents and disabled brother and his wife rely on him and he is “reliant” on his vehicle for his job.

He was fined £228 and ordered to pay costs of £775 and a £30 surcharge.

His driving record was endorsed with six penalty points but a 'no totting disqualification' was put in place, meaning he did not lose his licence.

Another driver, Umber Hussain, from Wendover Street, was seen using his phone behind the wheel between junction 3 and junction 2 of the M40 on May 13 last year.

The 25-year-old was found guilty of the offence at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on April 24 and was hit with six points on his driving licence and was ordered to pay costs of £250.

The Bucks Free Press launched the Hang Up! campaign earlier this year in a bid to make drivers think twice about picking up their phones behind the wheel.

The campaign was launched following the tragic death of Hilary Haines, who was crossing the road in The Parade in Bourne End when HGV driver Timothy Mason - who was distracted by his phone - hit her.

*This report originally said Mohammed Asim Shiraz did not receive six points on his licence, when in fact he did receive six points but avoided being disqualified due to mitigating circumstances.
