A major footbridge in Marlow is set to be repaired over two weekends in August and October, causing the busy A404 to be closed.

The A404 Volvo footbridge, which crosses over the dual carriageway into Marlow, was going to be taken off-site for the repairs in May and July, which meant the A404 northbound and southbound carriageways were going to have to be closed off

But the work was pushed back as the May closure would have coincided with the Pub in the Park food festival.

It was announced at a meeting of the Marlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce this week that the footbridge would be taken away during the first weekend of August, forcing the closure of the A404 between 9pm on the 3rd until 5am on the 6th.

It would then be brought back to be refitted in October, closing the A404 between 9am on the 12th until 5am on the 15th.

Wycombe district and Bucks county councillor said if the first weekend in August was unsuitable due to the weather, it could be pushed to the last weekend – the bank holiday.

He added that the iconic Marlow Bridge could also be closed overnight over the two weekends in a bid to prevent HGVs and other overweight vehicles abusing the three-tonne weight limit while the A404 is closed.

Chamber president Aimee Smith said: “As long as we’re protecting [the bridge], that’s all that matters.”
