A special occasion was celebrated in High Wycombe this month – as housing association Red Kite helped mark its oldest tenant’s 106th birthday.

Gwen Snook, who lives in High Wycombe, could possibly be the town’s oldest resident after celebrating her 106th birthday on Friday, June 15.

Mrs Snook, who has lived in High Wycombe since she was three-years-old, was treated to a special tea party with Red Kite staff and her friends and neighbours.

Former High Wycombe mayor and Wycombe Labour’s parliamentary candidate, Khalil Ahmed, and Red Kite’s deputy chief executive, Alan Keers, also joined the celebration at The Pastures sheltered housing complex where Mrs Snooks lives.

She proudly displayed her birthday card from the Queen – her second from the monarch - and a telegram that she received from the Government.

Red Kite also presented Mrs Snook with a celebration birthday cake and flowers to mark her milestone birthday, while she was also given gifts.

The 106-year-old said: “I never imagined I would get to this age. I love living in High Wycombe and I really enjoy the view over the town from my home. Let’s hope we get to do this all again next year.”

Alan Keers, deputy chief executive at Red Kite Community Housing, said: “It was fabulous to see so many well-wishers gather to wish Gwen a happy 106th birthday.

“She is well known locally, having been a resident in Downley for over 24 years.

“I was delighted to be able to share some time with Gwen, who took everything in her stride, which undoubtedly is one of the reasons that she has achieved this magnificent milestone.”

Mrs Snook was born in 1912 - the same year that the Titanic sank and the Royal Flying Corps, the forerunner of the Royal Air Force, was formed.

H. H. Asquith was Prime Minister of the UK and Woodrow Wilson became President of the United States in the same year.
