A neighbourly feud over a bungalow extension in Chalfont St Peter came to a head last week after councillors gave plans the green light.

Proposals to extend Noigls in Chestnut Close by one floor, causing the overall height to increase by one metre, were discussed by Chiltern District’s planning committee on Thursday (July 12).

John Williams, who lives next door to the home, told councillors the development would be “overbearing” on his property.

He said: “The case officer acknowledges that a proposed rear element of the Noigls extension would be visible from the north western rear part of my home.

“That is particularly relevant for my wife and me because our main sitting room, our sun room and patio are at that north western corner.

“It is here that we sit when at home, consequently the resultant house at Noigls will affect the amenity of our main habitable area. Our sun room is greatly used.”

However, Roger Messias, who bought the “tired 1960s bungalow” to refurbish with his wife, said the extension is “simple”, adding there would be “little change” to Mr Williams’ view.

He said: “Whilst I certainly do not wish to be disrespectful to Mr Williams, but I do believe he has become a compulsive and serial objector.

“He complained he didn’t like the fence I was erecting, so at my great expense I change the style of the fencing along his boundary.

“He now complains that our extended building will be overbearing even though it is 20 metres away from his home.

“In my opinion his view of the complete building will be little change from what he sees now, however in the spirit of good neighbourliness I offered to plant mature evergreen trees along our mutual boundary.”

CDC’s planning committee agreed to approve plans after deciding they “had no grounds for refusal”.
