A former High Wycombe supermarket that was shut down after shoppers reportedly saw a rat run across a food shelf will become a Greggs bakery.

The Midcounties Co-operative closed its Co-op store on the corner of New Road and Squirrel Lane in late 2015 and later sold it after shoppers say they saw a rat running across the shelf.

The store, which has been empty ever since, will now become a Greggs bakery – and signage for the company went up at the end of last week.

A spokesman for Greggs said 12 jobs have been created and the store will officially open its doors on July 19.

It is the second Greggs store to open up in the town, with another in the town centre in Queens Square.

Roisin Currie, retail director for Greggs, said: “We’re delighted to be able to invest in High Wycombe, bringing new jobs to the area and providing our customers with a modern and convenient new shop.”

The shop will be open from 6am to 7pm from Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm on Sunday.
