Plans to build an art deco-style apartment block in Beaconsfield were given the green light last week.

South Bucks District Council’s planning committee backed the proposals for Corner Cottage in Stratton Road on Wednesday, July 18.

Original plans to bulldoze the building and create an art deco-style house were approved last year – however developer, R Clarke Planning Ltd, submitted an application in March to build six flats instead. T

he new plans also include a “small” extension to the basement where the parking will be located – however the developers said no changes have been made to the overall design of the building.

The plans racked up 26 letters of objection from concerned residents  who slammed the apartments for being “utterly out of character” and an “overdevelopment” of the land.

However chairman of the planning committee, Ralph Bagge, said while Corner Cottage is “quite charming” he welcomed the £268,000 affordable housing contribution offered by the developer.

He said: “I think while many members would find the existing dwelling quite charming, what we will see instead is some contribution to some much needed affordable housing in south Bucks and a much more efficient use of the site replacing one dwelling with six dwellings, which given the challenges of finding more dwellings in a Green Belt district like ours is not to be sniffed at.”
