Frustrated High Wycombe residents have been left in the dark for “months and months” – because their street lights do not work and they have had no update on when they will be fixed.

Cllr Brian Pearce, who represents residents in Sunningdale Close, Barbers Wood Road, Sunters Wood Close and the surrounding area, says he has complained many times to Transport for Bucks (TfB) about the broken lights – but said they are “passing the buck” and blaming Southern and Scottish Energy (SSE).

He said: “The lighting in this area haven't worked for months and months. I have complained many times to Transport for Bucks and I know for a fact that lots of local residents have also complained.

“I have had heated conversations with Bucks CC inspectors and I believe that the buck stops at Transport For Bucks as it is their responsibility to maintain the street lights and ensure the health and safety of local residents.

“The long, hot summer has now gone, autumn has arrived with a vengeance and winter is about to arrive with obviously earlier, dark nights.

“We are wondering when on earth therefore, this lighting situation can be rectified.”

A spokesman for TfB said the underground cables feeding the streetlights in the area are maintained by SSE and they are currently faulty – adding that SSE are working to resolve the issue.

They said: “Transport for Buckinghamshire were advised that this issue had been resolved and that the lights were operational again on 13th September 2018.

“A TfB lighting crew visited the area for an inspection on 14th September 2018 to confirm this but unfortunately discovered that the power had been lost again.

“This failure was immediately communicated back to SSE for their urgent attention and they are working to resolve the underlying cause of the repeated failure with their equipment.”

An SSE spokesman added on Thursday: “We are committed to providing the best level of service at all times, and would like to apologise to customers who have been affected by the temporary fault on the cables supplying the street lights in Sunningdale Close, Barbers Wood Road and Sunters Wood Close.

“A team of engineers will be on site today to investigate the cause of this fault, and we will do everything we can to carry out the necessary repairs as safely and as quickly as possible.”
