Children’s lives are being “put at risk” by drivers speeding past a High Wycombe school – and Transport for Bucks has been criticised for allowing it to happen by removing speed bumps on the busy road.

Resident Julie Lord said traffic speeds on Daws Hill Lane – a road used by children and parents on their way to nearby St Michael’s Catholic School – have increased from an average of 22mph to 40mph since Transport for Bucks removed the speed bumps around two years ago.

Julie said the situation is a “tragedy waiting to happen” because there are no safe crossing points on certain stretches of the roads where there are blind bends.

A new pedestrian crossing does not help those who cannot get to it because there is no pavement on some sections of the road, she added.

Julie said: “Over two years since speed bumps were removed from Daws Hill Lane in High Wycombe Mark Shaw, cabinet member for transport, Mark Kemp, director of growth, strategy and highways and local councillor Lesley Clarke are still in consultation about what they can do to resolve the pedestrian safety issues of their own making.

"Children daily have to risk their lives crossing Daws Hill Lane from the residential roads on the south side on their way to local schools.

“40mph traffic on a busy road with children having to cross at blind bends on their way to school is a tragedy waiting to happen yet the council continues to delay a decision to do anything about the problem.

“Local children’s’ safety has been unnecessarily put at risk for over two years now – when will our elected council members start treating local residents’ safety as a priority and re-instate traffic calming measures as a matter of urgency?”

She is urging concerned residents to get in touch with their councillors so they can “speak up” about the issue.

Cllr Mark Shaw said: “We are considering all options for Daws Hill Lane very carefully and hope to make a final announcement shortly.”
