A 60-year-old cancer survivor had her hair dyed pink to raise money for the hospice which has helped her for the last six years.

Bev Rance, a finance clerk from Amersham, hopes to raise several hundreds of pounds for South Bucks Hospice, based at Butterfly House in High Wycombe.

She had her blonde hair dyed on September 12 at the Dunton James salon in Chalfont St Giles by Vicky Coles, and asked friends and family to sponsor her on a Just Giving page.

And her new hairstyle left her thrilled. “I had an awesome time and it looks amazing,” she said.

“My wonderful hairdresser Vicky didn’t charge me, so I am able to put that money in the pot too, which is fabulous and she closed the saloon for the afternoon so we were able to have a fun time doing it.”

Vicky said: “I had so much fun creating this ‘pink masterpiece’ and hope it raises lots of pennies for this great local charity.”

Bev, a mother-of-one to Tom, was first diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and was introduced to South Bucks Hospice a year later when she discovered she was suffering from lymphoedema.

This is a chronic swelling, normally in the arms and legs, caused by a malfunction of the lymphatic system.

“I have been going backwards and forwards to the lymphoedema clinic every six months,” said Bev. “The ladies at the clinic are wonderful and have helped me to understand and live with lymphoedema.

"The work they do is just amazing, and I wanted to give something back for all the time and care they have given me.”

Bev had another special reason for raising the money via the pink dye stunt.

“In 2011, I lost my hair due to chemotherapy,” she explained. “For a lot of people who lose their hair, it’s like losing your identity. I was lucky in that mine grew back in a reasonably short period.

"It is wonderful when it does grow back, and it was a big thing for me because I felt I had Bev back, no more scarfs! I have always wanted to be outrageous with my hair – and dyeing it pink is nothing compared to losing it due to chemotherapy.”

Ben O’Keefe, Community Fundraiser for the hospice, said: “It’s great when the local community comes together and helps each other. This is such a fun and colourful way to raise money for us and is appreciated by everyone here at the hospice.”
