An optician from Holmer Green will be taking on the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for cancer research after her friend was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer.

Erica Gill will be taking part in the half marathon on October 14 and raising funds for The Institute of Cancer Research, London.

Two years ago, Erica’s friend who she met during her studies at Buckinghamshire New University, Doug, got diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of just 35.

Unfortunately, by the time he was diagnosed Doug already had secondary disease in his liver and lungs.

Erica felt hopeless in how to help. She knew she wanted to do something, so decided to take on a challenge to raise money for cancer research.

So far, Erica has already raised over £600 for the ICR. With race day still to come, she hopes to raise even more.
