Pupils and staff at a grammar school joined forces to raise money in memory of a teenager who lost her battle with cancer a year ago.

Liberty Schurer sadly died last year at the age of 14 and her sister Olivia, a Year 13 pupil at Chesham Grammar School, started a fundraising campaign to raise money for Liberty’s Legacy.

Liberty, who lived in Chalfont St Peter, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer in September 2016 on her 13th birthday.

Her wish was for her family to raise money in her name for research into the condition, saying she did not want any child to suffer like she had or any family to be “ripped apart” like hers had following her diagnosis.

Her sister shared her story with students and staff, and led fundraising activities at the school, raising almost £4,000 for research into Ewing’s sarcoma.

Head teacher Annmarie McNaney said: “We have been honoured to support Liberty’s sister Olivia, who is in Year 13 at CGS, and her family as they fulfil Liberty’s last wish.

“I am enormously proud of the way in which the whole CGS community has come together and shown such support for Liv, raising so much money for research into Ewing’s sarcoma.

“Liv delivered incredibly moving assemblies right across the school so that all students got to know something about Liberty herself and about her legacy.

“The response from everyone is testament to Liv’s bravery and to that of Liberty herself.”

Since February 2018, Liberty’s Legacy has been a special tribute fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

Olivia said: “As a local community-based charity it’s lovely to see our whole school come together to raise funds for such an important cause.”
