The oldest lollipop man in the county celebrated his 90th birthday this week – which was marked by children at a Flackwell Heath primary school.

Pupils and teachers at Carrington Infant and Junior Schools, in Chapel Road, welcomed their well-loved lollipop patroller, Gilly Fryer, to a special assembly yesterday to mark the milestone occasion.

Mr Fryer has served the schools for more than 14 years, and was presented with cards from year two and year six pupils, while cabinet member for transport at Bucks County Council, Mark Shaw, handed over a cake.

Representatives from the Parent Teacher Association also gave him some gift vouchers and children recited a birthday poem.

Mr Fryer started his work as a patroller when his grandchildren were at school, and how he is helping is great grandchildren to cross the road.

He said: “This is the best job I've ever done, and there's no way I'm planning to retire from it yet! It's always lovely to see the children and their families every day come rain or shine. They make my day."

Cllr Shaw added: “Our school crossing patrollers are held in high regard by their communities, and Gilly is no exception.

“Gilly and his fellow patrollers play an important role in keeping our children safe. What's more, they become favourite people in our children's growing-up years, whom they remember well into adulthood."

Mr Fryer, a lifelong Wycombe Wanderers fan, was born in Wycombe and moved to Flackwell Heath when he got married.
