Five fire engines, several police cars and paramedics were called to the scene of a three-car crash.
Emergency services attended a collision on the M1 northbound between j4 and j5 for Watford which shut two lanes and caused tailbacks of nearly 90 minutes.
There were three vehicles, including a black Audi and a light blue Ford involved, with crews focusing particularly on a Ford, as shown by a video taken by a policing unit below.
A white Fiat was also badly damaged on the hard shoulder.
Fire crews from St Albans, Watford, and London attended and helped free two trapped drivers, Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue confirmed.
The policing roads unit have reported "minor injuries at this stage".
Drivers were left in queues of more than an hour following the crash which happened at around 7pm. All lanes were open by 10pm and traffic has now returned to normal.
