A picture has emerged of a man who died in a horrifying crash after a car towing a caravan drove the wrong way up the M40 earlier this week.

Stuart Richards, 32, from Stockport, Cheshire, died after his car, a Ford Mondeo, was involved in a crash with a Subaru Forester, which was towing the caravan in the wrong direction on the northbound carriageway of the M40.

The driver and passenger of the Subaru, both in their 80s, also died and are yet to be formally identified.

The Subaru was in a smash with the Ford Mondeo and also a Ford Focus near J6 on Monday – less than a week after a report of a damage-only crash involving the Subaru in High Wycombe was made to Thames Valley Police on October 10.

The force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in relation to the fatal collision, due to the previous contact.

The IOPC will now make a decision as to whether it will carry out an investigation.
