Charges in a Chesham car park are set to increase under new district council plans for parking in the area.

At a meeting of Chiltern District Council’s (CDC) cabinet on Tuesday members backed plans to raise the fee in Albany Place car park for drivers planning to stay more than four hours from £3.60 to £4.

Councillors also agreed to allow coaches into certain car parks “where there is capacity and need to do so”, as current council rules restrict where the vehicles can park.

A CDC report stated season parking ticket holders raised concerns there was limited availability in the Albany Place car park – prompting a review of the tariffs.

An investigation found use of the car park increased by 15 per cent over the past year, which is blamed on a fee increase in the car park by Chesham Station.

However the changes will not take place until they have been advertised and “no valid objections” have been received.

The report stated: “To free up space in Albany Place car park, the proposal is to increase the ‘over 4 hour’ tariff from £3.60 to £4.00.

“This will make the long stay tariff the same price as the nearby station car park.

“For customers requiring a lower charge, the nearby Water Meadow car park is able to accommodate them.

“This car park has a daily charge of £3.60 with current usage levels at an average 63% occupancy.”

Councillors also backed plans to reduce the fee for drivers parking more than nine hours in the Buryfield and Link Road car parks in Great Missenden from £7 to £6 – if usage does not increase once the Roald Dahl museum reopens on Saturday.

The cost of a season ticket at the two car parks is also set to reduce “to maintain the current discount to daily charge ratio”.

The new plans will also give the council more flexibility to increase the number of disabled bays where they are needed.

The report states: “The order currently lists the number of disabled bays in each car park.

“Removing the list from the order provides flexibility to increase the number of disabled bays where capacity allows without the need to amend the order.

“As an alternative, a page can be created on the council’s website listing this information. This is more accessible and easier to find for customers.”
