The controversial extension of a Gerrards Cross car park is set to undergo further scrutiny after politicians challenged a decision to push forward with the development.

An “extraordinary meeting” of South Bucks District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee will be held on November 8 to discuss the multi-storey plans for the Station Road car park.

Councillors have challenged decisions made by the cabinet on October 17 to approve the final business case for the car park and delay the construction by a year.

Cabinet also agreed to raise the overall cost to £13.051 million – an £800,000 increase from the estimate given in April.

Now any work to push forward with the development will be put on hold until the plans have been presented to the committee.

It is not clear which politicians challenged the decision and the exact reasons for doing so, however a spokesman for SBDC said a report on the call-in notice is currently being finalised and is due to be published on Wednesday.

Under SBDC rules five members of the council are able to stop any decision made by the cabinet from being implemented until it is discussed by the committee – if they provide a valid reason.

During next month’s meeting the committee will decide either to back the cabinet’s decision, or refer the issue back to council chiefs for reconsideration.

Planning permission was granted in August to extend the current car park by 4.5 floors – creating 442 spaces -despite fierce opposition from campaigners.

Spokesman for SBDC, Connie Primmer, said: “A notice of call-in was received on Thursday in relation to the Cabinet’s decision on October 17 regarding Gerrards Cross car park.

“The cabinet had approved the final business case for the project and agreed the construction period.

“The call-in notice was determined to be valid and therefore an extraordinary meeting of the overview and scrutiny committee will be convened to discuss the call-in request.

“Members who requested the call-in will be invited to attend the meeting.

“The relevant portfolio holder will also be invited to attend the meeting to respond to the call-in request and set out the case for the decision made.

“A vote can be taken to decide whether the committee wish to recommend that they concur with the cabinet’s decision, or refer the matter back to cabinet for reconsideration at the next appropriate meeting, with an explanation of the committee’s concerns and any specific considerations that need to be taken into account on re-consideration.

“The report for the call-in notice is still being finalised.”

Furious Gerrards Cross residents have previously raised concerns the cost of the car park is “spiralling” and called for another consultation on plans to be carried out.
