An 88-year-old woman took to the skies on her birthday to fulfil a lifelong dream of flying in a helicopter.

Doris Horne, a resident at White Plains Care Home in Tilehouse Lane, Denham, took flight from Denham Aerodrome last month for her much-anticipated ride, which she said was on her bucket list.

Five other residents – Valerie Holloway, Sheila Hammersley, Mary Youngman, Beryl Binley and Roy Turner –

The flight comes two years after she won the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat of an aircraft for her 86th birthday.

Engagement lead at the care home, Wendy Jefferies, said: “Five residents got to go up in the skies too, with not a moment’s hesitation, as the pilot announced he had a four-seater free. So we watched two flights fulfilling [residents’] lifelong wishes.

“They were euphoric, enjoying the thrill and attention from the crew. It was the best day ever for them.

“Morale was high and all the memories of the flight were evoked later as we watched the photo slide show on the big screen for all to enjoy.

“Fulfilling wish lists is my aim as engagement activity lead here at our wonderful home.”
