Plans to revamp a major roundabout dubbed the “gateway into Marlow” are still ongoing.

Earlier this year, the Marlow Free Press reported that the Wiltshire Road roundabout, at the A4155 Little Marlow Road, was going to be sponsored through a Bucks County Council marketing deal.

At a meeting of Marlow Town Council’s full council this week, it was revealed that four advertising signs have been installed at the roundabout by Four Marketing, the county council’s contractor.

Cllr Kathy Thomson suggested a planting scheme should be researched to include landscaping, a gateway in the form of a boat sculpture or planters to make the roundabout more attractive.

Marlow Town Council said in order to achieve this, BCC would need to complete a stage one safety audit on any proposed design at a cost of £980 plus VAT, with the initial costs for four basic planters coming in at £1,350 plus VAT.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Thomson said: “The idea is that this is the gateway to the town. It’s not a big roundabout but it is possibly the most dodgy in the town.

“It’s always broken – it’s a welcome to Marlow with a sign which is broken, it looks frankly a mess. It would be lovely to put a boat in there or something quite creative. I think four planters is a bit dull.”

Cllr Suzanne Brown suggested the council should take on the cost of the planters saying: “We all know that BCC costs can be quite high.”

“Maybe we could take it on ourselves as the costs could be lower.”

All councillors agreed a budget of £3,500 to come from the community infrastructure levy funding and delegated authority of the project to the planning, environment and transport committee.
