A Marlow school held a bake sale with a difference in a bid to tackle childhood obesity and reduce single-use plastic waste.

St Peter’s School, in Prospect Road, hosted Fruity Friday last week to help reduce sugar consumption in children’s snacks and the amount of single-use plastic that is blighting the world’s oceans.

Waitrose, in High Wycombe, donated the fruit for the event and the PTA spoke to Bio Pac, a bio-degradable packaging company, which donated all the non-plastic pots and forks.

The pots are made from starch and will bio-degrade in the ground in three months.

Children were able to buy a fruit pot or kebab before their break time and had the chance to try many new fruits such as pomegranates, passion fruit and mango, as well as the regular melon, apple, strawberry and raspberry.

Head teacher Amanda McCluskey, said: “The children really loved their fruity snacks with everyone saying how tasty they were. The whole event was a great success.”

The event raised £153 which will go towards improvements around the school.
