A major power cut across High Wycombe and surrounding areas has seen traffic signals go out and thousands of homes left without electricity.

Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) said a fault in the area had affected more than 340 postcodes - and 43,000 customers were left without any power at around 8am this morning.

Transport for Bucks said the power cut had resulted in "a lot" of their traffic signals going out - causing problems for drivers in and around High Wycombe town centre.

Wycombe Hospital and the town's railway station were also said to have been affected.

Contractors from Siemens were sent out to investigate and to try to repair the lights.

A spokesman for SSE said within three minutes of being alerted to the power cut at 8.08am, more than 98 per cent of impacted customers had their power restored.

The remaining 567 were back on the supply by 8.50am.

They added: "Engineers remain in the area and are working to establish the exact cause of the fault.

"SSEN would like to apologise to all customers affected by this power cut and thank them for their patience while engineers worked to get them back on supply."
