Thousands of Santas took to the streets of Marlow in a sea of red at the annual Santa Fun Run at the weekend.

The event, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Marlow and now in its 14th year, saw a record 2,750 runners streaming through the town to raise money for good causes.

Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave was on hand to kick start the 5k run in the High Street, with runners taking a full eight minutes to clear the start line.

Organisers are hoping to have raised £40,000 for charities, including lead charities Marlow Opportunity Playgroup and Rennie Grove Hospice which have been presented with initial cheques of £3,000 each.

Almost 200 volunteers helped to stage the event and hundreds of spectators lined the streets to cheer on the runners.

Steve Francis, Mylec Caddell and Harry Turner were the first men to cross the finish line, while Sophie Whitworth, Jessica Keane and Rianne Neale were the top female runners.

After the run, chairman of the organising committee David Sutherland said: “We are so pleased to be able to hold this event. For Rotary it ticks two big boxes.

“We provide a great opportunity for community involvement in Marlow whilst raising enormous sums of money for good causes. That is what Rotary is all about.”

He added: “The effort involved in organising this complex event is enormous.

“I would like to not only thank local Rotarians but also the large numbers of other groups and individuals who gave up their Sunday morning to help make this happen.

“A fantastic effort by all concerned.”
