Tips on how to avoid being the victim of crime over the Christmas period are being issued by police.
Crime prevention is seen as a particularly important subject over the festive season and there are a number of ways thieves look to target homes.
Detective chief superintendent Richard List said: “The Christmas and New Year period is a time when Thames Valley Police experience an increase in residential burglary.
“Our officers are working hard, along with our partner agencies, to reduce the impact of burglary within our local communities.
“By taking a proactive approach to home security, residents can reduce the risk of becoming a victim, while helping to protect others and building local resilience against burglary.”
Residents are advised to avoid leaving presents on view and to refrain from posting photos of expensive items on social media.
Anyone leaving the home can ask a trusted neighbour to check on their home, as well as timed lights to come on.
DC Supt List said: “If a burglary is in progress, or has happened very recently, you should report it to police immediately by dialling 999.
“Reports of burglary will always be thoroughly investigated by Thames Valley Police, and we will do everything we can do locate offenders and bring them to justice.”
