The Duke of Kent paid a visit to a Bucks business this week to present them with a prestigious Queen's award.

The royal stopped off at Trio Healthcare in Great Missenden, to hand them their Queens Award for Innovation.

The company was given the award for one of their products, a Trio Responsive Silicone - which has helped improve the lives of hundreds of patients.

The silicone adhesive prevents abdominal stomas from leaking for patients who have the intestinal openings as a result of treating conditions like colorectal and bladder cancer, Crohn’s or colitis.

The Queen's award was presented to Lloyd Pearce, managing director of the company.

The royal discussed Trio’s pioneering technology with the team and spoke with patients - ostomates - whose lives have been transformed by the company's work.

The Duke of Kent said: “I am delighted to be in Buckinghamshire to present Trio Healthcare with the Queens Award for Innovation.

"Their dedication to healthcare innovation is improving the lives of ostomates everywhere – they are very worthy winners.”

One of the ostomates - someone who has had an ostomy to create an opening in the body - Peter Lannen, shared how he set up a support group called Ostofriends after funding for stoma nurses in his area was cut. He also helps other ostomates to adapt to life with a stoma.

Diana Faires spoke about her vision – how she believes her stoma has made her who she is today and the importance of ostomates talking about their experiences.

Another ostomate, Alan Fox, who had his urostomy five years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer, told The Duke that Trio’s silicone seal “changed his life for the better”.

Mr Pearce said: “It is a huge honour to welcome The Duke of Kent to Trio Healthcare today. We are all so proud and delighted to be awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise for our Trio Responsive Silicone.

“It’s a very special day for Trio Healthcare as we welcome our Royal visitor to our Head Office. It’s an honour to receive this award for our contribution to the advancement of ostomy care.

“We are so proud knowing that our product is making a real difference to the lives of ostomates, who feel less socially anxious, now that bag leakage is no longer a concern.”
