CATHERINE Jones, known as Kitty, who was born just as the First World War ended, celebrated her 100th birthday last week surrounded by friends and relations.

Kitty now lives in High Pastures nursing home in Deganwy. On becoming a centenarian the staff laid on a special celebration for Kitty and all the family and friends who visited her.

The deacon and 25 strong choir of Bethin Melin y Coed chapel, where she had played the organ for more than 40 years, came to sing for her.

Kitty has one daughter, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Her family were farmers in Llanrwst for generations and she went on to Llysfasi Agricultural College, Ruthin to study agriculture. She was married in 1952 but after her father’s sudden death aged 51 in 1939, she helped on the farm. During the Second World War she supervised prisoners of war were drafted in to help with farming.
