Dozens of pensioners enjoyed a Christmas party laid on by students and staff at a High Wycombe school this month.

More than 60 senior citizens flocked to Highcrest Academy in Hatters Lane earlier this month for the free celebration which has become an annual highlight in the festive calendar for the local community.

Guests were treated to afternoon tea, including mince pies, sandwiches, cakes and sherry – and enjoyed a quiz, bingo and a Christmas sing-along.

Entertainment was provided by the school choir.

Santa Claus arrived bearing presents for each guest, who also went home with a piece of cake.

Mrs Sylvia Marsh, 79, who attended the celebration with her husband John, said: “I was very impressed with the party and the students were so pleasant and helpful.

“We especially enjoyed the school choir singing carols.”

The party is paid for via donations and fundraising from the students and staff.

Parents and staff also donated gifts for the special event. Money was raised through a recent ploughman’s lunch at the school and a raffle.

Gaynor Weldon, senior vice principal, said: “This is a lovely tradition at Highcrest and I am so proud of our students for helping to organise this.

“There is also a summer party for senior citizens held here as well because we think it is vital for our pupils to connect to their local community.”
