An elderly man was trapped in his car and had to be released by firefighters on Friday after a crash involving a lorry.

The crash happened at the junction to the Upper High Street car park in the centre of Thame at 4.15pm on January 11.

When firefighters from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene, they found an elderly man trapped in the front seat of the car.

Fire crews from Thame, Wheatley and Aylesbury used specialist battery-operated rescue equipment to remove the doors so medically-trained firefighters could give the man first aid until paramedics and specialist doctors arrived.

The crews also had to take the car roof off so the elderly man could be removed safely on a stretcher and taken to hospital by South Central Ambulance Service.

Thames Valley Police is investigating the cause of the crash.

Incident commander Andy Ford, from Thame fire station, said: “This collision shows how even at slow speeds a collision can still cause significant damage to vehicles and result in potentially serious injuries.

"It’s a reminder to always wear a seatbelt even when driving slowly and to be aware of other road users at all times”.
