A Gerrards Cross cemetery could be extended after plans were submitted to the council.

South Bucks District Council wants to expand Parkside Cemetery, in Windsor Road, to include a dedicated Muslim burial area, woodland burial plots and cremated remains plots.

SBDC said the overall aim was to create “deciduous woodland with mixed species and clearings of wild flowers with quiet seating for contemplation”.

Writing in the design and access statement, the council said: “In recent years demand for woodland burials has slowed to five to 10 plots per year and there has been an increase of enquiries and sales of plots to the Muslim population.

“The proposal is that the development should be carried out in phases, as and when the land is required.

“It is estimated that phase 1 will provide 300 woodland burial plots, 968 cremated remains plots and 356 Muslim burial plots. Phase 2 would need to be laid out approximately in 2025 unless sales exceed expectations.”

The plans will involve a change of use of part of the site, which is owned by the council, to woodland and lawn with paths and burial sites within.

The site is currently used for grazing horses and is screened from the formal graveyard part of the cemetery by a hedge with some trees.

SBDC added: “The council has a responsibility to make the best use of its assets, and the proposed development offers an opportunity to expand usage of the council’s facilities and increase its income.”
