In a bid to help people find a safe solution to domestic abuse, staff at Slough Borough Council have been trained as domestic abuse champions.

16 people, including four members of the council staff received specialist training from charity Reducing the Risk. The champions will in turn be able to train fellow colleagues. They will be able to identify warnings signs of abuse and the next steps to take, including directing people to local services.

Alongside raising awareness about the emotional and physical pain domestic abuses can have, the champions will emphasise that abuse is a serious crime. Staff were taught how to safely enquire about whether abuse is occurring in a relation and how to safely plan and contact agencies for support.

Councillor Pavitar K.Mann, cabinet member for regulation and consumer protection, said: “It is great that Slough Borough Council staff have been given this opportunity to learn how to spot the signs of domestic abuse and coercive control and what the best way is to help.

“Abuse can be isolating by its very nature and any contact with the council will be an opportunity to access help because of important training like this.”
