Crossing the road safely is something every child has to learn.

Pre-schoolers from Chalvey Grove Children's Centre took their first step towards safe crossing when the 'learning through play' road safety show visited their premises at Montem Primary School in Slough.

The children, aged two, three and four years old, talked to school crossing patroller Anne McLachlan who helps them cross Chalvey Grove everyday and Thames Valley Police PCSOs Sully Ahmed and Ryan Dawe.

Road Ranger Louis Taylor, of ACME Events, then performed a road safety magic show entertaining the children with his sidekick puppet Troy, a character who had almost got hurt by a car while he was running towards a ice-cream van.

The children also learned how to use zebra and pelican crossings before dressing up in high-vis outfits and roleplaying as police officers and crossing patrollers.

Bella Dean, manager at Chalvey Grove Children’s Centre, said the setting had taken a suggestion from the community and implemented it with the help of Ramandeep Gogna, sustainable transport officer with Slough Borough Council's Better by team.

Mrs Dean said: “We wanted to start the road safety message early in their learning journey."
