A campaigner has said Dominic Grieve, who lost a vote of confidence at the Beaconsfield Conservatives’ annual general meeting on Friday, should be “applauded not vilified” as he held a “vigil” outside the MP's office.

Peter Roberts stood outside Mr Grieve’s constituency office yesterday (Sunday) in what he calls a gesture of support for the beleaguered MP.

Mr Roberts said: “Under the UK constitution, MPs are our representatives not our delegates.

“They represent all constituents not just those who voted for them and have a duty to consider the national interest not rubber-stamp voters’ opinions.

“If we don't like that, we can vote them out in an election. The 2016 EU Referendum was explicitly and legally advisory not mandatory.

“’Respect’ for the result means considering it carefully, not implementing it come what may.

“Any MP who considers that leaving the EU is not in the national interest is not just entitled but bound to make this clear.

“Despite receiving death threats, Mr Grieve has acted with courage and conviction and should be applauded, not vilified.”
