A campaign has been launched by the Chiltern Green Party calling on both the Bucks County Council and Chiltern District Council to declare a climate emergency in Bucks.

The party have said that the councils should follow suit of a number of other town, borough, city and county councils across the country who have declared emergency status. 2030 has been earmarked as the year in which many councils aspire to be carbon neutral.

The group were at Chesham market on March 30, collecting signatures for a petition aiming to trigger a debate at the district council.

Zoe Hatch, CGP Coordinator said: “All over the country, more and more councils are declaring a climate emergency, and we need Bucks County Council to step up and do the same. Business as usual is over. It’s time for a radical transformation.

“It’s time for real climate action to protect the people of Buckinghamshire from the worst effects of global warming such as floods and heatwaves. The science is clear and alarming; last year the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that we have only twelve years left to make any meaningful difference to the accelerating pace of climate change.”

Buckinghamshire County Council and Chiltern District Council issued a joint statement, saying: “Both Buckinghamshire County and Chiltern District Councils are involved in a variety of climate change-related projects and we always welcome the community's involvement highlighting local issues.”
