WITH Aldi and McDonald's in discussion with Wycombe District Council over derelict land in Cressex, the Bucks Free Press looked back on what readers told us they want to see.

When Costco's plans to open on the old park-and-ride car park fell through, we ran a poll on what readers would most like to see on the land - it has been empty for more than three years.

Early discussions are under way about a new drive-thru and budget supermarket in a project similar to the one seen in Baker Street.

BFP readers voted overwhelmingly that the store they would most like to see would be Ikea.

Currently, the nearest Ikea stores are in Wembley and Reading - both about 26 miles by car and roughly 45 minutes drive away.

The BFP appraoched Ikea about the possbility of moving to the derelict land in Wycombe.

But sadly, despite the continuing popularity of the Swedish furniture giant, bosses are now focussing on smaller city centre locations and will not consider a new store in the Bucks area 'for the next few years'.

An IKEA spokesperson said: “We’re in a fast changing retail environment and we want to make sure we continue to be affordable and convenient.

"Our ambitious growth plans mean we are focusing on all parts of creating a great customer experience, whenever and wherever people need us.

"This includes investing in our online offer and customer services, rebuilding and adapting existing IKEA stores, and evaluating different locations as part of a new city centre approach.

"As such, we are reviewing our growth strategy on an ongoing basis. We are not considering High Wycombe as a potential location for IKEA at this current time.”
