OFSTED recently made a two-day visit to the Buckinghamshire College Group, with the results showing a general improvement since the merger of Aylesbury College and Amersham and Wycombe College in October 2017.

The report highlighted how much progress had been made in four areas.

Firstly, the report examined how much progress had been made in ensuring that leaders and managers had ‘implemented effective quality assurance processes to support teacher in improving their teaching practice.

The report said ‘leaders and managers have a very clear understanding of the quality of teaching and learning in all curriculum programmes. OFSTED stated that the group had made ‘significant progress’ had been made in this area.

Significant progress has also been made in regard to ‘governors and senior leaders making sure that students receive high-quality education and training and achieve their qualifications.’ The report praised the new senior leadership team, saying that they had set ‘realistic but high ambitions’ and ‘a clear direction for the improvement of the college’.

Significant progress has also been made in ‘improving the curriculum offer for adult students to meet the needs of local employers and communities.’ OFSTED said that the Buckinghamshire College Group had ‘put in place a well-considered curriculum that meets local and regional needs.

The report did however claim that only reasonable progress had been made in ‘improving the quality of teaching learning an assessment’, particularly in mathematics. It said that ‘leaders and managers have improved the quality of teaching and learning; however, this is not yet of a consistently good quality and progress in some areas has been slow’.

Karen Mitchell, Principal and CEO, said: “I am delighted that Ofsted has recognised the significant progress that has been made since the merger and I would like to thank staff, governors and students for their hard work and efforts in achieving this.

“We will continue to build on the findings and continue to work hard to provide a great learning experience at our Aylesbury, Amersham and Wycombe campuses.”
