It was a beautiful early summer evening as we ventured into the Hit Or Miss pub in stunning Penn Street.

What immediately hits you walking into this quaint pub is that is exudes rustic charm throughout with stunning views across the countryside.

You are made to feel welcome from the moment you set foot in the building and we were superbly looked after by Philip and the team.

There is a huge selection of real ale to choose from and we had a drink before we perused the mouthwatering menu.

For starters, I went with something from the specials. I plumped for the chicken meatballs with penne pasta in tomato and tarragon sauce (£6.95) and my wife went with the tempura prawns with sugar snaps and tomatoes with sweet chilli and a marie rose sauce (£7.95).

The meatballs were delicious. They were tender and light and were full of flavour and packed with herbs. A perfect way to start a meal.

The tempura prawns were crisp and almost translucent. They were perfectly matched with the tomatoes and sugar snaps. The dish was fresh and was enjoyed by both of us.

For main, my wife went with the sirloin steak (£22.95). She chose to have a fennel and cherry tomato salad on the side and Philip was only too happy to be accommodating with regards to the menu.

I ordered the pan fried pork medallions with a brioche and parmesan crust served on a bed of asparagus, spinach and mushrooms (£16.50).

The medallions were intriguing. The crust was light and flavoursome and was a quite genius like idea to put that with the meat. It was seasoned beautifully and the pork melted in the mouth, The vegetables were cooked with the utmost care and the whole dish was a thing of beauty.

My wife's steak was a superb cut and tender. It was absolutely delicious and the salad with it gave it acidity and was a superb light accompaniment to it.

For dessert, we went with Philip's recommendation of a dessert platter and had little helpings of everything.

We had orange creme brulee, eton mess, irish cream cheesecake, chocolate mousse, rum and raisin ice cream and malva pudding, which is one of the signature dishes of Kola, the head chef at the Hit Or Miss.

The malva is cooked at 174 degrees for precisely 42 minutes and is a decadent sponge with apricot jam and balsamic vinegar, which helps the sponge rise. It is a real treat and we would highly recommend this for everyone to try at this brilliant pub.

With us replete, I have to say it was a fantastic meal in a fantastic pub in an idyllic setting.
