Steve Baker has thrown his hat into the ring to stand to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister, saying it is “conceivable” that he could be a contender for the top job.

Speaking to the BBC, the Wycombe MP said he has had “a lot of pressure” from members of the public to stand.

He said: “It’s got to be someone who believes in leaving the European Union. The two front runners are very clearly Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab – I think they have complementary talents.

“There is no point shying away from it – people have been asking me to stand. I have had a degree of support from across the country that i could never have foreseen.

“I have also now had some Members of Parliament asking me to stand. So I need to face up to the challenge of taking a decision whether I should do it. I need to talk to the other candidates and I will need to reach a decision on that but while I am mulling it over, I couldn’t possibly back another candidate.

“Some colleagues have said I should consider it and from outside Parliament I have had a lot of pressure so out of respect for those colleagues and members of the public, I have to consider it.”

Commenting after Theresa May's tearful speech outside 10 Downing Street, the Wycombe MP said it was a "sad but necessary day".

He added: "Very dignified statement from Theresa May, beginning to set out the many things which she has achieved in office."
