A concerned mum has expressed disgust after her autistic son was wounded by broken glass after coming off a slide in Lodge Hill playground.

Weronika Popcyznska, 28 and of Plumstead, was visiting the Bexley park on Monday, May 20, with her four-year-old boy, Oscar, when he fell into a small verge of grass at the end of the slide, nicking himself on the sharp glass which was hidden in the patch.

Glass found by the worried mum

Speaking to News Shopper, Ms Popcyznska said he was lucky to have avoided receiving more serious injuries during his playtime.

"I live in a small flat and he’s got autism which means he likes to be outside all the time to run around.

"I’ve been going to this park for three years and it's just been getting worse and worse.

"Imagine, if he would have went on his front he could have cut his face," she said.

After contacting the council about the issue on Twitter, she was told by a council official that someone had been dispatched to deal with the hazard and that the park is maintained on a daily basis but this waste may have been left between visits.

However, Ms Popcyznska claimed she had returned to the playground on Thursday and the glass was still near the slide, sparking further outrage and forcing her to pick up the glass herself.

Due to the nature of her son's condition, Ms Popcyznska explained that he has made himself familiar with the park and would struggle to attend another if she wanted to.

She also believes that this situation is unfair for her son as she no longer feels that the playground is a safe environment for him to play in.

"My little boy really likes that park and if I take him different places, he feels uncomfortable.

"Coming into the summer, kids are going to start taking their shoes off in the grass.

"Imagine if kids running with no shoes on," she said.

When approached for a comment, a council spokeswoman said: "We are sorry that someone has been injured by litter in one of our parks.

"We carry out daily playground inspections.

"Litter can of course appear in between these inspections.

"We carried out an additional inspection of the park following notifications on social media earlier this week and no glass was found at that time. We will carry out another inspection today.

"We’re sorry small minority spoil our parks and playgrounds like this for everyone else.

"That’s why we have a zero tolerance for littering and issue on the spot fines to those caught ruining our Borough in this way.
