A Bucks New University technical manager has been named in the top 100 individuals or groups whose work at universities is saving lives and making a life-changing difference to health and wellbeing.

Sam McCormack, Technical Manager in Psychology, Simulation and Performance and her team were recognised for their work as part of Universities UK’s MadeAtUni campaign.

Sam is the brainchild behind the Dementia Simulation, which provides students at the university the chance to experience what life is like for patients who suffer from failing cognitive function and require nursing support.

Sam said: “We restrict students’ senses and ‘aggravate’ them – for instance taking blood pressure, make them stand, sit or walk - but with no communication.

“Students say the experience allows them to reflect on their own practice and how to confront others when poor practice is demonstrated.

“It is a fantastic honour to feature as one of the Nation’s Lifesavers for our work in dementia.

“We’re grateful for the support we have received from all the teams we work with, not just at the University but in all the healthcare environments we work with too.

“The MadeAtUni campaign is a great chance to celebrate the many ways universities are having a significant impact on our everyday lives.”

Professor Dame Janet Beer, President Universities UK, said: “Every day, up and down the country, universities are also working on innovations to transform and save lives.

“Research taking place in universities is finding solutions to so many of the health and wellbeing issues we care about and the causes that matter.

“Universities are responsible for some of our biggest health breakthroughs and in revolutionising the delivery of care.

“This campaign is a chance to bring to life the wonderful and often unexpected work going on every day in our universities.”
