Marlow schoolchildren are calling on the town council to demand a recognised climate emergency within the town and surrounding areas.

They want residents to be more aware of what cars they drive, and what they eat and wear.

Issy Owen said: “The amount of plastic bags the local residents use, all the rubbish thrown out of car windows and unnecessary journeys made by large 4x4s in our town needs to stop.

“This is our future we’re talking about and we’re really very worried about what kind of world we’ll end up living in.”

Last Friday, more than 1.4 million school pupils around the world walked out of lessons in what is believed to be the biggest protest calling for action on climate change.

Marlow Town Council (MTC) acknowledged their plight as part of the community and spoke to the children, telling them MTC was one of the first councils to sign up for plastic free communities and make a concerted effort to remove use of single use plastics.

Town clerk Hilary Martin said: “Marlow is very proactive with protecting our climate within the community. We recycle as much as possible, clear fly tipped items and recycle as much as possible.

“We ban the use of pesticides and herbicides to protect the wildlife.

“As an office, we are trying to eradicate single use plastic and working towards a plastic-free town.”
