A new cancer hub has been launched in Amersham, giving patients in the area the opportunity to receive some of their treatment at the new community hub.

The hub has been set up as part of a scheme in Bucks funded by Macmillan, which aims to bring treatment closer to patients’ homes and avoid unnecessary parking and petrol costs.

Eligible patients will be able to undergo treatment clinics at the local hub rather than travelling to either Stoke Mandeville or Wycombe Hospital, alleviating pressure on cancer units at both hospitals.

Once fully operational, the hub is predicted to benefit approximately 40 patients each month.

Joanne Wright, 44, who was one of the first patients at the Amersham clinic. She said: “I really appreciate being away from an acute facility where chemotherapy is being delivered. This site is closer to home and more easily accessible.”

Shelley Orton, Macmillan Partnership Manager in Bucks, said: “This project is already having a positive impact on patients’ well-being in Thame and Marlow, so it’s great news for people with cancer that a third hub has opened in Amersham.

“Having cancer services available closer to home was one of the things a Macmillan-funded report into cancer services in Bucks identified as being important to people, so although this won’t benefit everyone in the county, it’s a step in the right direction.”
