The first Facebook-funded journalist in Reading has started work at Newsquest’s Berkshire offices.

Alice Knight is working with the team producing The Reading Chronicle as a community reporter.

The role will be Alice’s first job having completed a degree in Multimedia Journalism at Bournemouth University earlier this year.

This position will see her become one of 80 community reporters in the UK hired as part of a new community news project funded by Facebook.

The company has donated £4.5m to the NCTJ to support a two-year scheme with regional publishers, which aims to bring more diversity into newsrooms.

Alice’s role will see her engaging with different communities and ensuring their voices are heard within The Reading Chronicle in print and online.

She said: “I’m very excited to begin my career as a journalist and couldn’t think of a better way to start than by working in local news.

“I absolutely love meeting new people and sharing their stories and can’t wait to venture into the community.”

Group editor Andrew Colley said: “We are delighted to welcome Alice to our team at The Chronicle. She is brilliant addition to our excellent group of reporters.

“Alice’s role will help promote news and views from the area of Caversham as we continue to ensure we offer the best coverage of the area in print and online.”
