Gilbey’s in Old Amersham is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to.

Everything about the eatery oozes with class from the location, the layout, the scenery, the service and the food.

The layout resembles a place where the rich and famous would eat out as the cutlery and crockery was laid out ready for an important guest to arrive, and as I soon as I walked into the Market Square venue, the front of house staff treated me like I was a VIP or a member of the Royal Family as they served with a smile, were courteous and even stopped for a chat when they a moment to themselves.

With six menus on offer at Gilbey’s, I opted to choose from the evening a la carte list, and with a three-course meal coming my way, I decided to start off with a warm summer pea, lettuce and marjoram soup which came with crème fraiche and rapeseed oil.

I accompanied this with a side dish of bread & butter, and I can easily say, that this was the best soup I have ever had in my life.

The texture of the soup was perfect as it wasn’t too watery or thick. It was so smooth that you could really taste the pea travel through your taste buds.

The crispy bread and warm butter absorbed the soup perfectly which lead to a wonderful combination.

For the main, I went for the grilled thyme-marinated supreme of free-range chicken which came with summer garden vegetable and almond quinoa and lemon sherbet dressing.

To accompany the main dish, I also ordered mash potato, skin on fries and chunky chips as I was curious to know how different each potato product tasted, and I was blown away by the quality of the meal.

Two succulent pieces of chicken were on top a sea of quinoa and with the creamy mash to act as a side piece, everything was picture perfect.

You could really taste the herbs that marinated the chicken and the mash potato was so creamy that it gave the quinoa that extra kick.

So, it was no surprise that this meal was eaten in a flash.

The two types of chips/fries gives the restaurant that modern feel as both side dishes did their job. The chunky chips were crispy, heavy and will certainly fill you up, whilst the skin on fries were light, not oily in the slightest and strangely, gave you more room for more food.

The high standard of the food lead me to have the simplest dessert possible, as I had two scoops of ice cream (one vanilla scoop and one chocolate scoop), which came with a wafer in between.

It was so light and creamy that it really did hit the stop.

All in all, my experience at Gilbey’s was one I won’t forget. Not just because of how good the food was, but because of the wonderful staff.

A huge mention should go to the restaurant’s head chef Adam Whitlock, whose dishes were made with care and precision, Gibley’s supervisor Pavel Masek who was nothing but polite and welcoming, and to Isabella Di Falco and Hannah Rice.

The two Front of House staff made sure that everything I needed was there and took time out of their day to have a chat.

Gibley’s in Old Amersham. It’s a go to place.
