Marlow Archaeology will host a free exploration event this weekend at the town’s Rookery Park.

The free event will see local archaeologists from in and around Marlow visit the popular green space to search for artefacts and relics which could potentially go back to the 13th century.

Secretary of Marlow Archaeology Sue Winters told the Bucks Free Press: “The last archaeological dig we did at the Rookery was back in 2015 and it was very popular.

“Unfortunately, we don’t do this every year as we do other archaeology events during the year, also in different locations.

Plus, it has been difficult to try and get everyone together because everyone has got their own stuff to do and for this to work, we need the whole gang here.

“But we’re glad it’s happening this weekend.”

The group of archaeologists, who have been given permission from the local council to dig up part of the park, are hoping to find ruins of Rookery House which was built in roughly 1850 before it was demolished in 1964.

They are also hoping to find relics and artefacts from the original Marlow Bridge which was located next to the town’s Two Breweries pub, a 13th century chapel which was associated with the Knights Templar, a farmhouse from 1775 and chalk block walls which date to circa 1670.

Mrs Winter then added: “It’s just a great feeling when you find something because it would have been there for a long time without anyone noticing it.

“And depending on what we find, we either give the artefacts to the Marlow Museum or we keep them ourselves.

“We’re very close to Marlow Museum so if we find anything of great note, we will give it to them.

“And even though Marlow Museum is so small, it is a beautiful place.

“This is also an open event so anyone can turn up, it is free and we’d be pleased to see anyone come down there.

It will start mid-morning and will finish at 3.30pm.
